At The Belfry it's not just the fairways that are green and well-tended. A multitude of environmentally-friendly initiatives are in place to help minimise the resort's ecological impact and improve sustainability.
The multitasking greenkeeping team has planted vegetable and herb gardens on site, which deliver fresh produce to the hotel's many kitchens. They also use non-confidential shredded paper and kitchen waste to create a nutritious mulch. With the environment in mind, no additional water is drawn from the mains supply to irrigate the resort's three golf courses. Instead, waste water from the hotel is treated on site and re-used outdoors.
Indoors, virtually all lights use low energy bulbs and motion sensors have been installed to minimise unnecessary illumination. Toilets in all 324 guest bedrooms are fitted with water saving devices, and a new central delivery hub has virtually eliminated exhaust pollution from commercial vehicles in public areas of the hotel.
Staff are encouraged to be proactive in suggesting environmentally friendly ways of carrying out their roles and many grassroots initiatives have already been implemented. As an independently-minded venue, the resort is able to source supplies locally. Local schoolchildren also benefit from curriculum-enhancing site tours with The Belfry's 'green champions', to learn how a large business can be environmentally aware.
