Earth Day Commentary – Anna Hawkins, Sustainability Lead at The Belfry Hotel & Resort
“As one of the Midlands’ biggest hospitality providers, we take our responsibility to both people and planet seriously and want our guests to have peace of mind that a fantastic stay at The Belfry is also a choice for positive climate action.
“Because that’s the thing, sustainability isn’t treated as an add-on here, it’s inbuilt. Whether that’s installing kitchen equipment to filter and reuse 480 litres of cooking oil each month, fitting waterless urinals to save approximately 900,000 litres of water every year, or making our grounds a safe home for over 100,000 honey bees and bumble bees, it’s woven into every part of our operations, so sustainable travel experiences come as standard.
“We work hard to earn our green credentials each and every day - from sourcing materials responsibly, sending zero waste to landfill and limiting nitrogen and pesticide use, to prioritising local recruitment, investing in electric vehicle charging points and seeding out more than 1,100m² of wildflowers. It’s steps such as these that have seen us earn EarthCheck, Green Tourism and GEO accreditations.
“But the work doesn’t stop there – with dedicated ESG Champions representing every department of the resort, we’re committed to consistently building upon our sustainability legacy because, quite simply, our guests deserve both exceptional quality and the reassurance that their experience treads lightly on the planet. Take our new The Club leisure centre as an example – recently achieving an internationally-recognised BREEAM Excellence rating for building sustainability, it reduces environmental impact whilst delivering first-class facilities. We take this same approach across the resort - proving sustainability can elevate, not compromise, luxury.”
